On 3rd July 2020, the Planning Authority approved the application for the building of a new football and rugby complex in Kordin, limits of Paola. The investment related to this project amounts to €8.2 Million Euro. This sports complex will be the first one of its kind in the Maltese Islands as it will be built according to UEFA and IRB Standards.
This project will consist in the construction of a stadium and artificial turf ground for 648 spectators and will host Rugby and Football domestic and international matches. The complex shall be fully equipped to international standards and shall provide for changing rooms, offices, a conference room, a restaurant, other ancillary rooms for stadium support amenities, media conference and reporting rooms and parking provisions for visitors and users.
During the planning stage, Projects Plus Limited was responsible for the architectural design of the project and its technical personnel were required to supervise the input of the contractor’s professionals to ensure that the contract conditions are being met. Projects Plus is also responsible for the project and contract management related to this project.
In preparation for this project, in 2019, Projects Plus carried out various studies related to the site and these included a site contamination test and a geotechnical survey. In 2019, ERA gave its go ahead for this project and on 1st April 2021, the works on the first phase of the project commenced. The first phase of the project involved the excavation and exportation of contaminated waste tender, the archeological monitoring tender and also the geotechnical investigations tender, all of which will be executed by July 2021.
The tender of the second phase of the project will be awarded in the coming weeks. This phase will include the construction of the pitch, the installation of floodlights, the installation of fencing, a parking area and a water reservoir.
